Description :

During the First World War, anti-German sentiment permeated South Australia. In 1917 an act was passed to change German place names to English ones.

This newspaper article from the Mount Barker Courier announces the decision to restore German place names in South Australia. Mount Barker is in the Adelaide Hills, an area that has many towns originally settled by German immigrants. Adelaide Hills towns that had undergone name changes include Hahndorf (Ambleside) and Lobethal (Tweedvale).
