Description :

Distant view of Port Vincent, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia

A view from the high ground to the north of Port Vincent curving around to the spit, Surveyors Point now occupied by the caravan park. Surveyors Point however was the earliest landing point for the ketch trade until the jetty was built in 1877: this can just be seen projecting into the bay. Later the jetty would be replaced by a wharf along the foreshore. The cliffs to the north and the sandy spit made the bay a very safe anchorage.

The township was surveyed in 1839 and the Government Auctioneer at the time, Robert Cock, named the town Port Vincent. Surveyor's Point marks the point from which the Sixteenth Special Survey began in 1839.

A marina has now been built to the left of the photo and a walking trail along the clifftop features native vegetation and splendid views of the bay.
