Description : |
An anchor on the sea front at Port Victoria on the Yorke Peninsula. The jetty and boats can also be seen. The museum is on the left. The jetty and the shed at the left hand side of the photograph have been recommended for State Heritage listing in 1998 report for the Department of Environment, Heritage and Aboriginal Affairs Heritage of the Yorke Peninsula. The shed now houses the Port Victoria Maritime Museum and dates from 1878. The jetty itself still retains its length of 1883, being originally built in 1878 for 7000 pounds. The 1883 extension was angled to the south and provided greater loading capacity. Port Victoria was proclaimed in 21 November 1878: sheltered by Wardang Island it provided anchorage for large ships which were loaded from ketches. It became famous for the seasonal visitation of the large sailing ships during the 1920s to 1940s, long past the time when these ships had disappeared from most other ports. It features in Eric Newby's book The last grain race. The memorial adjacent to the jetty commemorates the tall ships and their crews and was erected by Cape Horners Australia Inc. |
