Traditional dancing display during the Schuetzenfest at Hahndorf. Established by Lutheran immigrants in early 1839, Hahndorf, in the Adelaide Hills, was originally laid out in the 'hufendorf' (farm village) style of Germany and Prussia, but later converted to a 'strassendorf' (street village). Many of its early German style buildings have been retained and restored making Hahndorf South Australia's oldest remaining German settlement. A Schuetzenfest or 'shooting festival' is a traditional German celebration, including shooting competitions, dancing and music. |
