Description : |
The full title of this booklet is A Breakfast calendar of three hundred and sixty-six suggestions for dishes suitable at breakfast : a few quotations and some recipes and it contains just that. A list of suggestions is presented month by month with a page of quotations preceding each month. Confusingly, however, the recipes are in no discernable order. Amongst the British-style food we might expect to find in South Australia during this time, especially with the patriotic feelings for the 'Mother Country' which were aroused during the First World War, there are a number of recipes influenced by other types of cuisine which might be a little surprising. Most common are Indian style dishes, no doubt a result of Britain's colonial administration of the sub-continent, and most frequently it seems that the addition of curry powder is enough for a dish to be labelled Indian, curry, Madras or Calcutta style. The suggestions for most months contain at least one 'Indian' dish. A number of dishes contain macaroni or spaghetti and there are recipes for 'Genoa Risotto' and 'Italian Rice' representing Italian cuisine. An interesting 'fusion' is the recipe for 'Curried Macaroni and Dates, or Raisins, or Fruit in Season'. Recipes from other cuisines include 'Kebobs', 'Jombalayah', 'Sasatins' (fairly similar to 'Kebobs'), 'Creole sausages', 'Kromeskies' (a Polish or Russian dish of minced meat or fish croquette wrapped in bacon) and 'Norwegian Fish Cakes'. |
