Description :

From the Mail, 6 August 1938.

Announcement of the leader, and members of a South Australian Government expedition party sent to the Simpson Desert to search for possible remains of explorer Ludwig Leichhardt.

The article lists potential members of the expedition party; Dr Grenfell Price, AD Smith, CP Mountford, AC Kinnear and Frank J Fenner, providing a brief overview of their qualifications.

Whilst only 23, Fenner was, according to Grenfell Price, "one of the ablest medical anthropologists in Australia" and had "more experience on native skulls than anyone else in the Commonwealth." It was to be his role to ascertain whether the skeletons found by Mount Dare Station owner Edwin Lowe were European or Aboriginal.

A medical student, Fenner first gained an interest in anthropology through Dr. TD Campbell, and he accompanied the University of Adelaide's Board for Anthropological Research on three expeditions during the 1930s.

Fittingly, it was Campbell who replaced Fenner when he was unable to take part in this expedition - having cracked his kneecap in a hockey match only days before its departure!

Fenner went on to a distinguished career in virology and at the age of 95 is an Emeritus Professor at the John Curtin School of Medical Research, Australian National University.
