Description :

Members of a South Australian Government expedition party sent to the Simpson Desert to search for possible remains of explorer Ludwig Leichhardt meeting with Chief Secretary Sir George Ritchie, August 1938. (L-R Sir George Ritchie, Dr Grenfell Price, CP Mountford, AD Smith, Edwin Lowe).


Two weeks earlier, it was reported in the newspaper that Lowe and his son had...
"gone out into the Simpson Desert about 80 miles north-east of Mount Daer (sic) station to muster cattle. They had found a camp of seven skeletons grouped in a circle. It appeared that the men had been around a camp fire and had been surprised by blacks and speared. Two miles away he and his son had found another skeleton. That man had probably been wounded and had 'run for it.'"
Lowe offered to lead a party of experts to the site so that they could verify these suspicions, and a team was put together.
