Description : |
Members of a South Australian Government expedition party sent to the Simpson Desert to search for possible remains of explorer Ludwig Leichhardt at the Adelaide railway station, before their departure ,18 August 1938. (L-R ?, R Grundy, AC Kinnear, AD Smith, CP Mountford, A Grenfell Price, Sir George Ritchie, Paul Thomas, Edwin Lowe, ?).
Underwhelmed by the attention, Mountford wrote in his diary "The ubiquitous press were there with their cameras and after photographs, and farewells, we were off." Throughout the two day journey the party shared the train with a troop of boy scouts, and assorted tourists on their way to Central Australia. On the second day Mountford was invited to give an onboard lecture. He retained this invitation in his diary. "A highly interested audience invites Mr. Mountford for a lecture about his experiences. Salary: grateful smiles." (followed by eight signatures) |
