Description : |
A horse drawn vehicle and an early make motor car wait outside the new goods shed at Port Hughes jetty, near Moonta in South Australia The jetty was built over 1911-1913 being officially opened in May 1913. It was 430 metres long but this was later reduced to 417 metres. The residents had petitioned the government for a jetty as early as 1876 arguing that Port Hughes provided deeper water closer inshore than nearby Moonta Bay. Sand ridges between Port Hughes and the Moonta Mines provided an obstacle however to the development of Port Hughes particularly when a horse tramway was built to carry ore from the mines to Moonta Bay. However Port Hughes serviced the local farming community as an export point for the grain harvest, with grain being stored in the shed at the head of the jetty until ketches arrived to carry it away. Later even this role was removed when bulk handling facilities were opened at Wallaroo in 1958. Now the jetty is a popular place with fishermen. |
