Description :

Extract in which Fitzpatrick makes recommendations on the diet which should be followed by colonists in South Australia.

Fitzpatrick suggests that the consumption of large amounts of meat which characterised the English diet was not appropriate in the considerably warmer climate of South Australia: 'One meal of fresh meat per diem is all that is necessary in South Australia : on the contrary, vegetables cannot be used too freely...' (pp. 20-21). He goes on to discuss the consumption of alcoholic drinks; a notably longer section than that devoted to food.
