Description : |
This newspaper advertisement for the Chaffey brothers' irrigation colonies at Renmark and Mildura promises prospective settlers that they offer "homes", "health", "pleasure" and "profit". The Chaffey brothers, George and William, were Canadian born, but found success in establishing irrigation colonies in California. The Chaffeys had been invited to set up similar schemes in along the River Murray by the Victorian parliamentarian Alfred Deakin (later to become Australia's second prime minister). Renmark and Mildura were established in 1887. |
