Description : |
Maitland Municipal Brass Band. Pictured here with bandmaster Hugo Fischer, Maitland were winners of the 'C' grade trophy at a 1929 competition held in Perth to mark Western Australia's centenary. Perhaps a reflection of the working-class brass band movement of Victorian England, as well as the traditional associations of the Cornish in the copper triangle, town bands were prevalent in Yorke Peninsula in the latter part of the 19th century. The first recorded appearance of a band in the Maitland area was the Kilkerran German band in 1877. They were soon followed by the Maitland Brass Band, who made their debut at the Maitland show in 1881. According to reports they, 'performed creditably giving promise of future excellence.' From thereon the band played at a number of functions in the region. The Maitland Band was then dormant in the 1890s, but was reformed in the opening years of the 20th century. Shortly before the 1929 triumph they were also victorious in the 'D' grade of the Tanunda band competition of 1927. |
