Description : |
Residents of Wardang Island. From 1910 to 1968 Broken Hill Associated Smelters (BHAS) quarried lime sand from Wardang Island to use in its smelting process at Port Pirie. During this time a small population built up on the Island to service the industry. As well as installing their own infrastructure on the Island, BHAS paid for homes and amenities for its employees, and built the Island's first school, which opened in 1918 with about ten pupils. |
