Description : |
Wardang Island. From 1910 to 1968 Broken Hill Associated Smelters (BHAS) quarried lime sand from Wardang Island to use in its smelting process at Port Pirie. Initially the carting work was done by horse-drawn trucks. In 1918 when a large deposit of fine lime sand was found at the north of the Island BHAS built tram lines and a kerosene locomotive to transport the sand down to the jetty. |
