Description : |
Tuna being unloaded from a boat at Port Lincoln The first catches of tuna were made from Port Lincoln in 1949, and in 1954 two boats began commercial fishing for tuna. By 1963 the number of boats engaged in tuna poling had risen to 1963. Tuna fishing is now one of the town's biggest industries and Australia's largest tuna cannery is located in Port Lincoln. The Tunarama Festival which celebrates and showcases the region began in 1962, and is traditionally held on the Australia Day long weekend, 26 January, the day the fleet set sail. |
