Description :

This Thomas English design for the Bath Hotel was built in 1881 on the corner of the Parade and Queen Street, Norwood. The original Bath Hotel had been built in 1856, slightly further east of this building. However a fire in 1876 saw the Bath rebuilt in its present location.

Jackman Gooden Architects is the result of decades of business mergers. It had its origins in the separate firms of English and Soward, and Garlick, Jackman and Garlick.

Thomas English arrived in South Australia in 1850. He worked as a builder-architect with Henry Brown and an architect with Roland Rees for three years. George Soward who was born at Norwood, became a business partner to Thomas English in 1882. After Thomas' death in 1884 his son took over the partnership. Although George Soward eventually withdrew from the partnership his name was retained by Joseph English.

Daniel Garlick had arrived in Adelaide in 1837. He set up business in Gawler in 1851 but moved to Adelaide in 1855. Arthur Garlick and Herbert Louis Jackman joined him and in 1893 his business became Garlick, Jackman & Garlick. In 1899 Herbert L Jackman bought out his two partners.

In 1917 Herbert Montefiore Jackman and Lancelot Gooden became articled to the H L Jackman firm. Herbert Montefiore Jackman then went to work with English and Soward. In 1925 this firm became English, Soward and Jackman.

In 1936 when Herbert L Jackman died, Herbert M Jackman consolidated the two firms of Garlick, Jackman & Garlick and English, Soward and Jackman, and formed a partnership with Lancelot Gooden. The consolidated business became Garlick and Jackman, retaining this name until 1945 when the firm became known as Garlick, Jackman and Gooden.
