Description : |
A group of men standing and sitting with a horse drawn wagon on a beach near Port Julia, Yorke Peninsula; they are identified as being Canadian bulk handling experts visiting South Australia. Arthur Searcy, president of the South Australian Marine Board, and chairman of the Harbors Board, is standing second from the left. The late 19th and early 20th centuries were a boom time for the grain producers of the Yorke Peninsula. Port Julia was in the ideal position to capitalise on this, located just across St Vincent Gulf from Port Adelaide. In those days ketches would transport the produce directly from the jetty at Port Julia to waiting ships at the Port Adelaide wharves. By the 1950s bulk handling was common place on the Peninsula, and most of its grain left via Wallaroo, winding down activities at Port Julia. |
