Description : |
Paul Thomas and AD Smith laying pegs at Ritchie's Ridge during a South Australian Government expedition sent to the Simpson Desert to search for possible remains of explorer Ludwig Leichhardt. The expedition was mounted to examine relics found near Mount Dare Station by station owner Edwin Lowe. The site of their excavation was named 'Ritchie's Ridge' in honour of the Chief Secretary of South Australia at that time, Sir George Ritchie. The highly experienced Arthur Smith was chosen as surveyor for the expedition, serving as the Deputy Surveyor-General at the time. The presence of young lad Paul Thomas is a bit harder to explain... A friend of Rex Lowe, Thomas was visiting Mount Dare Station, and had travelled up on the same train as the party. How he ended up accompanying the expedition, through inhospitable, sometimes dangerous country is not explained in Mountford's journals. Teenagers were obviously made of sterner stuff back then! |
