George Penton, a seaman, who arrived at the colony on Colonel Light's brig 'Rapid', on the 20th August, 1836. He managed George A. Anstey and Thomas Giles' run 'Gum Flat' from 1847. When Giles and Anstey took up their pastoral lease at Gum Flat, they appointed George Penton as their overseer. He subsequently also became overseer of Penton Vale - named for him by his appreciative employers, Giles and Anstey. Penton Vale was further south from Gum Flat, in the hundred of Dalrymple. Penton was described as one of the best of Colonel William Light's surveying team. Thomas Giles described him as, 'an excellent judge of sheep and moreover, a determined, resolute fellow - just the sort of man for a new country.' (Cook p. 7) |
