Description : |
A Fettler's cottage on the Finke railway siding. The notice on the gate reads, 'Passengers requested not to pick flowers'. Outback settlements developed along railway lines to accommodate the people, or settlers, employed to maintain the railway tracks. The word 'Fettler' developed from a misinterpretation of the spelling of 'settlers' using the long or descending 's' [f], and the workers became known as fettlers. This photograph was taken by Mountford whilst acting as secretary to the 1935 'Commonwealth Board of Enquiry into the alleged ill-treatment of Aborigines near Ayers Rock'. |
