Description :

Portrait of Private Michael Francis Hanrahan, of the 16th Battalion.

Private Hanrahan enlisted on 20 April 1915, at almost 27 years of age, giving his occupation as a labourer of Yorke Peninsula. He was the third son of Mrs Mary Hanrahan and the late Mr Daniel John Hanrahan of Arthurton.

Private Hanrahan's military records state that he had been stationed in Egypt and had sailed for France in June 1916. The 16th Battalion was involved in bloody trench warfare on the Western Front, advancing on the German Hindenburg Line, and suffered heavy losses at Bullecourt in April 1917. Private Hanrahan was reported as missing in action on 11 April 1917, and a few months later was reported as killed in action at Bullecourt. As there is no known grave, Private Hanrahan, like many Australian soldiers, is remembered at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial in France.

The World War I Memorial Plaque at the Arthurton Council Chambers bears his name.
