Sketches at the football match - Ports v Norwoods by Edward Harral are marvellous illustrations showing how football was played in 1888. From the top left going clockwise, the sketches are entitled: Exciting chase ; Head over heels ; An enthusiastic, yelling crowd ; A lively moment ; A race ; One for his "nob". Players at this time wore lace-up jerseys, caps and knickerbockers tucked into their socks. Port were resplendent in magenta jerseys, navy knickerbockers, and magenta and blue cap and hose, while Norwood wore the red and blue that they continue to wear to this day. As you can see from the match report (click view more images above) Norwood was successful in this match by a narrow margin and they went on to win the 1888 South Australian Football Association premiership. |
