Description : |
An unidentified footballer sets the ball for a place kick. Photo believed to have been taken in the Clare region. In the very early years of Australian football the game was started by a place kick, in the same way as a rugby match. Starting by a ball-up was not introduced until 1887. (Pascoe p. 11) The place kick was mostly used as a set shot for goal but had effectively died out by the advent of World War Two. However in 1956, during a match against Glenelg, West Torrens player Mick Clingly became the last player to execute the kick in the SANFL. |
