Rear view of the Colonel William Light statue on Montefiore Hill looking towards the Adelaide hills. Some controversy surrounds who should receive the credit for the design of the city of Adelaide and the selection of the site on which it would stand. Traditionally, Colonel William Light, South Australia's first surveyor-general who was appointed by the South Australian Colonization Commission to carry out this work has been given all the accolades. More recently however, some scholars have claimed that Light's deputy, George Strickland Kingston, was in fact responsible for both the city's plan and the selection of the site. |
