Description :

View of one of the windows of Miss Gladys Sym Choon's shop in east Rundle Street, featuring photographs and parasols.

At the age of 18 Gladys Sym Choon, the daughter of Chinese migrants, opened the China Gift Store on Rundle Street, Adelaide. She had studied bookkeeping at Adelaide High School - quite unusual for that era and particularly for a Chinese girl. Gladys's siblings also ran businesses in Rundle Street.
After Gladys's retirement, her daughter ran the store until its closure in 1984. Gladys was commemorated in the name of the women's and men's clothing business that now occupies the shop, Miss Gladys Sym Choon.
