Description :

A group of letters written by Elsie Birks, later Mrs Gilmour, whilst a school teacher at Murtho Village Settlement and letters written later reminiscing about her years at Murtho. In the selections presented here Elsie writes about the River Murray being low because of lack of rain and the drought conditions the family endured. She describes how these conditions affected river transportation and the yield of crops they could produce compared to their experience in previous years at the settlement.
