Description :

S.S. "Corowa" in dry dock at Mannum

Corowa was built at Moama in 1868 and from 1876 was owned by W R Randell, but throughout a fairly long life was owned by many others including Chaffey and Landseer and the Gem Navigation Company, all well known shipping owners on the river. The paddle steamer went out of service in 1930 and the hull lays in Bryans Creek at Morgan

Mannum Dry Dock was originally built at Milang on Lake Alexandrina as a floating dock, but apparently there was insufficient water depth for it to operate successfully. W R Randell moved it to Mannum in 1876 where it was installed as a graving dry dock with some alterations. As the only graving dock on the river system the Mannum Dry Dock was in demand and dealt with about 30 paddle steamers a year, providing employment for many. It was purchased by Captain Johan Arnold after Randell's death: he operated the dock until 1925, after which it fell into dis-use. The dock has now been repaired and forms the centrepiece of the Mannum Dock Museum, along with the paddle steamer Marion. Mannum Dry Dock is on the State Heritage Register.
