This comprises correspondence between the Lieutenant Governor Sir Henry Young and the Secretary of State for the Colonies, Earl Grey, regarding a proposal for a railway from Goolwa to Port Elliot for the carriage of goods shipped down the River. Also included is Harbour Master Thomas Lipson's report on the suitability of Port Elliot as a harbour and estimates of the costs involved. The railway line was built in 1854 and subsequently extended to Victor Harbor in 1864 after Port Elliot proved unsafe as a harbour. Initially a horse tramway it was eventually converted to steam power in 1885. |
