Description : |
This pamphlet argues why and how the River Murray should be fully utilised for irrigation and navigation all year round. Gordon argues that the cost in constructing locks and storage basins would be minimal compared to the anticipated economic returns through trade and settlement that exploitation of the river would bring. The argument for barrages at the Murray mouth was topical at this time and this pamphlet gives a review of the projects which had been proposed to date including the 1857 proposition to separate the channels located at Goolwa and the Coorong, and the 1874 proposition to cut a canal directly to the sea, just below Goolwa. |
