Richard Barratt was a keen photographer, and it is probable that this photo was taken from the roof of the Norfolk Arms Hotel, where he lived with his publican parents, Elizabeth Gertrude and 'Doxo' Barratt, as part of his documenting of Adelaide in his youth.

From the hotel's roof on the southern side of Rundle Street, looking west, Richard recorded the now famous 'Beehive corner', so named because of the ornate treatment at the building's highest point.

Cars are parked along Rundle Street, which has now become a pedestrian mall.

Miller Andersons, Sewells, Seppelts are some SA business names displayed on billboards and advertisements. It seems the day was auspicious, as British and Australian flags are flying on the north-western corner of King William and Hindley Streets.
