Description : |
Adults and children travelling in a steam driven car made by David Shearer of Mannum in 1898; the vehicle has wheels and a body similar to a wagon with passengers each end, the driver's seat is in the centre. Known as Australia's first car, Shearer's steam-powered vehicle used mallee (a type of small eucalyptus tree) roots for fuel. Mallee trees were particularly abundant on the land around the River Murray where Shearer lived. After building his successful prototype, Shearer returned to his agricultural machinery business. |
