Colin Thiele's River Murray Mary tells the story of Mary Agnes Baker who lives on a farm on the banks of the River Murray in South Australia. Mary's close family life and love of living near the river are detailed, as well as the arrival of soldier settlers in the region in the 1920s, the harsh conditions of working the land, and workers' camaraderie and celebrations.

Mary's many adventures include trips on the paddle-steamer Blackwater Bessie, skippered by her friend Abel Stenross. When her mother is badly burned, Mary courageously braves the raging floods, rowing a dinghy and catching a ride on Blackwater Bessie to fetch a doctor for treatment.

Recipient of many national and international awards, Colin Thiele AC has been writing for children since his first publication in the early 1940s. Several of his works, including Storm Boy and Blue Fin, have been made into major feature films. His passionate concern for the natural environment is evident in his writings.
