Album entitled 'Sketches in South Australia' by Richard Ernest Minchin, with 60 small sketches of scenes in Adelaide, northern South Australia and on the River Murray. To see individual images do a NUMBER search on PRG 119/28/1-60. Included in the archival record group for AM Madden is a sketchbook featuring watercolours of River Murray scenes painted by Richard Ernest Minchin (1831-1893). Mannum and Blanchetown are featured in the paintings. Minchin migrated from Ireland to Adelaide in 1851. He held positions as draughtsman at the Land and Titles Office and drawing master at Prince Alfred Boys' College. From 1859 onwards, he exhibited works at South Australian Society of Arts and was awarded numerous prizes. Minchin was Director of the Adelaide Zoological Gardens from 1882-1890, visiting South-East Asia and Europe to collect specimens for the Zoo. |
