Description : |
The Unitarian Christian Church had its beginnings in Eastern Europe in the 16th century. The ethos of the movement was to promote personal choice in religion rather than adherence to dogma, with a particular belief in the 'oneness' of God, rather than the Christian Trinitarian view. The church's founders saw this as a return to a purer form of belief pre-dating the institutionalisation of the church under the Romans. The Unitarian Church flourished in England and America in the 1770s. The South Australian Unitarian Church was founded in 1855 and is the oldest congregation in Australia. In the 19th century many well-known Adelaide identities attended the Unitarian Church, including Alfred Simpson, Catherine Helen Spence and Edith Hubbe. |
