Description :

The Rev. James Jefferis was invited to come to Adelaide in 1859 to form a Congregational church at North Adelaide. The Brougham Place church opened in 1861 and Jefferis' eloquent preaching and liberal Christian views attracted a large congregation. Jefferis believed in a 'vital union between religion and the State' and was very politically active, writing for the Adelaide newspapers for many years. From the 1870s he worked to promote Federation through his articles in The Advertiser. In 1896 Jefferis helped to form the South Australian Council of Churches and enlisted this group to support the 1898 Federation referendum. Jefferis spoke out on a range of topics, supporting unionism, public education, ecumenical movements and socialism, and was against the White Australia immigration policy, as well as the theatre, dancing, gambling and prostitution.
