Description : |
Much work was done towards the recording and translation of Aboriginal languages and customs by the early Lutheran missionaries Teichelmann, Schurmann and Meyer, as well as the Congregational minister George Taplin. Many of these works remain major sources of reference for the ancient customs of South Australian Aboriginal groups. However, the main aim of the missionaries was to convert the people to Christianity. This collection of stories, hymns and prayers in Arrernte (Aranda) was compiled by Pastor Carl Strehlow, the much loved pastor at Hermannsburg Mission (Ntaria) in Central Australia. Pastor Strehlow began preaching in the Arrernte tongue in 1897. During his 28 years at the mission, six were spent in translating the entire New Testament into Arrernte, and Strehlow also compiled a dictionary of over 7,000 Arrernte words. The Aboriginal people called him 'Enkarte'. |
