Description : |
The River Murray has seasonal flows and was ususally only navigable for half the year. With the establishment of the irrigation colonies from the late 1880s there was another need besides steam navigation for a reliable source of water at all times of the year. The various states began to negotiate the building of the locks and weirs that would control the river's flow. Following agreement between the states regarding the locks and weirs that would be required on the river to enable this, the engineers began to draw up plans and cost estimates. It would be years before the lock system on the river was finalised. |
