Description :

Published originally in 1856, the engineer William Hays describes the nature of the River Murray, its course and the mouth and the benefits of steam navigation. Hays' details of the difficulties of navigating the mouth of the river successfully, supports the decision to build a railway from the river port of Goolwa to a coastal port, initially selected as Port Elliot. He provides costs and actual construction details of the Goolwa-Pt Elliot railway line. He includes details of the strength of the rail selected and the selection of timber for the sleepers, the necessary earthworks in the construction of the line and the choice of materials for ballast.

He also makes mention of 'the possibility of a freak of nature permitting the cessation of the flow' of water causing the mouth of the river to silt up. The silting of the mouth has become a sad reality with almost continuous dredging required to keep it open.
