The "Gem" in lock 5, Waikerie


Six locks were to be constructed on the South Australian section of the River Murray: at Blanchetown, Waikerie, Renmark, Murtho (Paringa), Kingston (Overland Corner) and Berri (Bookpurnong). Of these Blanchetown (Lock no. 1) was completed in 1922. The lock at Waikerie (Lock no. 2) was not completed until 1928 and was the fourth to be built.
