Description : |
The Adelaide Day Centre was started in 1985, by Sister Janet Mead and Sister Anne Gregory, as a service providing a daily cooked meal for homeless men from a cottage in Moore Street. In 1987 a nightly winter soup van began. The men were encouraged to join in handicraft work at the Centre, selling crafts together with items made by women and children in Thailand, to assist the work of Adelaide woman Rosemary Taylor with the poor of South-East Asia. As the work of the Centre grew, volunteers joined Sister Janet and the men, distributing food parcels, furnishing houses, and advocating for those living in need. A vegetable garden at the old Adelaide Gaol to supplement food parcels and the Brian Burdekin Medical Clinic were established as adjuncts to the Centre. By 2005 the centre had furnished 4,500 homes and instigated an annual Christmas hamper run delivering over 1,000 hampers, amongst a range of support services. |
