RENMARK: A view of the weir and lock


The lock at Renmark is No. 5 Lock, but was the third to be built in South Australia. Part of the early 20th century scheme to harness and control River Murray flows for irrigation and the paddle steamer trade the first lock built was the Wiliam R. Randell Lock at Blanchetown, opened in 1922. In South Australia the last lock built was at Murtho in 1930. There are a further four locks on the river east of the border.
