Description : |
Until 1928, the largest community of Greek immigrants in South Australia was at Port Pirie. Many newly arrived migrants were employed at the town's smelters and in 1924 a Greek Orthodox Community, with a church and school, was founded in the town. A small wooden building purchased from the local Anglicans became the first Orthodox church. However, widespread retrenchments in the late 1920s caused much poverty and forced many Greek families to leave the district. Christophoros Manessis immigrated to Australia in 1924 and went to Port Pirie to work in the smelters. He was a deeply religious man, and in 1925 was ordained a priest and appointed rector for the Greek Orthodox community in the whole of South Australia, as well as Broken Hill. The downturn in work at Port Pirie contributed to him leaving for Perth in 1926. |
