Photograph of Ernest Watkins 1917.

On the 12th of October 1916 Ernest enlisted in the Australian Army. He was 31 years, 10 months old and was married with one child when he joined.

A few months after joining, he was posted to the 10th Infantry Battalion fighting on the Western Front in France. The battalion took part in bitter trench warfare at Pozieres in the Somme Valley and Ypres in Flanders, in the major British offensive of 1917, the Third Battle of Ypres.

Ernest returned to Australia in March 1918 and was discharged on the 18th June 1918 because of an old back injury.
