Description : |
South Australia was founded at a time when the traditional status and rights of the Church of England were being questioned. Consequently, it was the first British colony founded without government financial support for the building of Anglican (Church of England) churches or payment of clergy. Due to the fear that there would be no religious organisation in the new colony at all, a late provision was made to allow for the appointment of a Colonial Chaplain and the Rev. Charles Howard was chosen as the first Christian minister in South Australia. In 1846 Baroness Burdett-Coutts, a wealthy London philanthropist, gave the necessary funds to establish a bishopric in South Australia, and Augustus Short was appointed Adelaide's first Anglican Bishop. Although on a different footing to the Church of England in Britain, the South Australian Church of England nevertheless held a prominent position amongst the Christian churches, with the largest number of adherents. |
