Description : |
'Grammar is one of the most difficult subjects to illustrate--indeed one might be forgiven for considering it impossible. It has always been an unpalatable subject ...' (Whalley p. 123) Endeavours to illustrate the points of grammar also included attempts to make a game of the subject, not always successfully. The publisher John Harris achieved several successes in the early 19th century. The Pictorial grammar published in 1842 by Harvey and Darton provided 'straightforward instructions but the humorous illustrations made an impact by their unexpectedness' (Whalley p. 125). The work of the illustrator Alfred Crowquill suggests a similarity to the great 19th century humorist Edward Lear. |
