In 1911 as a young Presbyterian minister, John Flynn was sent to Beltana to work for the Australian Inland Mission, ministering to the people of the outback. In 1926 he persuaded Alf Traeger - inventor of the pedal wireless - to come to Alice Springs, and with Traeger's expertise Flynn established the Aerial Medical Service (the Flying Doctor Service) at Cloncurry in 1928. Flynn was an outspoken advocate for the Aboriginal people and a founder of the ecumenical United Church in North Australia. |
