Description : |
Julia Warren Farr came to South Australia in 1854 when her husband, the Rev. George Farr, was appointed to the position of headmaster of St Peter's College. The Farrs were untiring workers in support of the poor and the needy. As well as her work at her husband's school - running the boarding house and other tasks - Farr was the major instigator of the Anglican Orphan Home for girls in 1860, and was a member of the organising committee until her death in 1914. Years later this was re-named Farr House. In 1878, with Dr William Gosse, Farr founded the 'Home for Incurables' at Fullarton, now named the Julia Farr Centre. Farr was an indefatigable worker, serving on many social welfare related committees and organisations for long periods. A cameo portrait of Julia Farr appears in the top of this page from a volume of illuminated testimonials presented to Henrietta Kennion, wife of the Anglican Bishop of Adelaide in 1894. |
