The second edition of Robert Torrens, Colonization of South Australia. Political economist and chairman of the Colonization Commission for South Australia, Torrens published this work in response to an article published in the Westminster Review which criticised the South Australian colonisation plans. In Part I, Torrens publishes a letter to John Crawfurd, esq., the author of a number of works on India and the Far East. Torrens felt Crawfurd was a fit person to judge the accuracy of the differing arguments. Of the Westminster Review article Torrens wrote, The reviewer is incompetent to form an adeqaute conception of the objects, which the supporters of the new colony seek to accomplish; that he does not comprehend the principles, upon which they propose to proceed; that he has read the works of Mr Ricardo, without being able to undersatnd them, and that he miscalculates figures, mis-states facts, and draws inconsistent and contradictory conclusions. |
