Description :
The Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches was founded in the United States in 1968 by the Rev. Dr Troy Perry. Although open to all, the church specifically aims to support members of the gay and lesbian community, as many mainstream Christian churches have often not been supportive of people within this group. The Adelaide congregation began as the 'Community Church', and when Troy Perry visited Adelaide in July 1974 the decision was made to affiliate with his organisation. At the time of its closure in July 2005, this was the oldest continuous MCC fellowship in Australia. The first pastor was Stan Harris and the original group met in a hall behind Union Church (now Pilgrim Church), later moving to the Quaker Meeting House in Pennington Terrace, North Adelaide. Pastor Jude Noble led the Adelaide congregation from 2001 until its closure. An independent group named 'GLBTQIF Christians' now continues the ethos of the original group.
