Description :

I grew up in area we called the camp in centenial park in the 50's and early 60's. All the houses were the same, built from asbestos and fibro. They had 1 bedroom at the top of the house, with the kitchen and dining combined next, then 2 other bedrooms. you had to walk through the 1st to get to the second. The combined toilet and bathroom were off the laundry which was straight out the kitchen door. there were 2 cement troughs and a copper boiler in the laundry, and there was a chip heater over the bath for hot water. If you were lucky you might have had lino on the floor, but not many people did, they just had wooden floors. The house was one long building, and there were 7 of us kids and our parents living in it. We were poor, as were most people who lived in the camp. We were told that the camp had been an army camp for soldiers in the war, and after the war, the s.a. housing trust bought them for poorer families to live in. I'm not sure if ex-soldiers were given priority, but I do know that my father had been in the army and the war.

I often think about our poor upbringing and recall the surnames of many other families that lived there. I would love to know what happened to those people. I am still friends and in regular contact with a couple of families from that era, and would love to know if any of them know more about the camp than me. I cannot find much mention of it at all. I don't have any photo's from that time of the houses or area, just a few family snaps of us kids. I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who reads this and also lived there.
